The Six Week Mark
Our inaugural year is in full swing!
The first six weeks have emphasized the importance of flexibility. When building the Iaomai Academy program as part of KaiPod Catalyst, there were specific expectations about the number of students that would enroll, the curriculum options, and what the schedule would look like each day. By the end of the first day with our one enrolled student, we quickly realized many expectations would have to change.
In the last six weeks, we shortened the week to four days and our meeting time to end by 2:00 pm. While Zearn and Khan Academy remain a supplement to math instruction, we recently switched to Math-U-See for better pacing and topic comprehension. It has been a positive change for our student as the small environment enables mastery before moving onto a new concept.
To meet our student's reading and writing needs, we have introduced Nessy Reading & Spelling and 8th grade English Language Arts assignments to supplement the Lexia PowerUp program. Iaomai Academy would like to say a huge thank you to Teachers Pay Teachers for the excellent ELA resources that can be tailored to a student's current abilities!
Things have not worked out exactly as planned, but the wonderful thing about a microschool is that there is no need to rush through curriculum, we can make changes without much fuss, and we are always striving to meet students where they are now and build up their academic skills and confidence.
